TSSA’s Legacy of Giving
TSSA has chosen the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and specifically the hospital in Galveston, as the beneficiary of their fundraising efforts for 16 years.  The reason becomes clear during a tour of the hospital and the results are evident in the care provided and in the caring attitudes of everyone on staff at the hospital.  It starts with the commitment we witnessed from the board of trustees, to the doctors working on new techniques, to those leading rehab exercises, and on down to the volunteers in the reading room or working on art projects with the patients.  Their slogan, “Love to the Rescue,” is very much in evidence throughout.

TSSA raises funds for the hospital through a variety of ways.  There are many opportunities for members to get involved.

Texas Hold ‘Em Charity Poker Tournament
This fun event has become a tradition at the annual conference.  Players can join in the fun for $100 donation to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.  Even novice players can have a fun time so don’t be shy if you’ve never played before.  Everyone wins by being part of the camaraderie.  The tournament has become so popular, we didn’t have enough seats to accommodate everyone wanting to play.  If you don’t play but still want to visit with your fellow members, for a nominal donation of $30, spectators can enjoy the munchies, cheer for their favorite poker player, or just sit back and watch the action.

Live and Silent Auctions
Items for the live and silent auctions are solicited by volunteers from area businesses, and others are donated by our generous members.  Each year, we can count on members who offer their product or service – or even their fishing boat, vacation home, or autographed books by their favorite authors!  Whatever the item, you can count on the generosity of our members to add to the funds raised on behalf of the hospital.  The excitement of the auctions has been amped up considerably in the last couple of years.  Dan and Laura Dotson of Storage Wars fame made their first appearance at the auction in 2012.  They certainly added an extra touch of fun to this staple event in TSSA’s fundraising efforts.  With the addition of Walt Cade from Storage Wars Texas, the bidding frenzy reached new heights.

Matching Challenge
A recent addition to TSSA’s legacy of giving has been the Matching Challenge where funds are donated and members are challenged to raise an equal or greater amount.  Thanks to the generosity and giving spirit of our members we were able to donate to $194,245 in 2016, bringing the total amount donated to-date to more than $1,000,000.

The TSSA Legacy of Giving is due to our members who donate items, play poker or bid on items they might not even need.  We know that you give your time, your money, or other resources to make a difference in a child’s life.  We can’t think of a better reason for doing this.

TSSA thanks the Hunt family for their unswerving devotion to this cause.  Each year they spend countless hours rounding up items for the auction, and providing the volunteer manpower throughout the conference setting up the auction area and running the auction in an orderly and professional manner.  We couldn’t do it without David, Doug, Trena, Donna, Jason and Jennifer Hunt.  Thank you.
